Vor einiger Zeit bin ich per Zufall auf die Berliner Newcomer Band TOMBOLA aufmerksam geworden und habe ihre Tour angekündigt. Die Review zu ihrer Debüt-EP gibt es jetzt:
Die drei Jungs, die optisch ein bisschen wie Bilderbuch-on-a-Budget aussehen, haben nämlich im Juni ihre Debüt-EP Tombola veröffentlicht. Beim ersten Durchhören fallen mir sofort Parallelen auf: TOMBOLA haben etwas von Isolation Berlin, nur klingen sie nicht so resigniert-depressiv und hipster-fertig mit der Welt. Zwar mit melancholischer Note, aber bei TOMBOLA fährt zum Glück niemand den Möwen hinterher, auf gradem Weg ins Meer 😉 Dazu gibt mir Spotify unter ähnlichen Künstlern noch Namen wie Fibel, Die Nerven, Drangsal, Milliarden und Heisskalt vor. Kann ich so unterschreiben: Alles deutsche Bands (wahlweise aus Berlin), die sich im deutschen Kontinuum von Indie bis Punk bewegen.
Die Eröffnung der EP namens Tombola, produziert von der Band TOMBOLA heißt – Überraschung: Tombola. Der Song fängt soft an: Ein funky Gitarrenriff, dazu ein entspannter Drum-Groove. Hat ein bisschen was von Von Wegen Lisbeth, die Stand By Me covern. Dann kommt der Text, denn ich lyrisch gut finde. Mir gefällt die Metapher mit der Tombola: Den Hauptpreis so sehr zu wollen, dass man alle Lose kauft um ganz sicher zu gewinnen – Sehr romantisch aber auch ein bisschen verzweifelt. Ist ja eigentlich das selbe.
Der Refrain ist ein bisschen langsamer, schwerer. Tristan (der Sänger) will immer noch nur den Hauptgewinn und ein bisschen Glück. Ich gönne es ihm auf jeden Fall und kann Paralellen zu meinem eigenen Leben ziehen. #hooked. Der B-Teil ist dann ein schöner, ruhiger Kontrast und lässt mich noch mal aufhorchen. Ich werde belohnt mit dem Solo-Teil am Ende, denn dieser versprüht richtige Don’t Look Back in Anger-Vibes. Guter Start in die EP, ich höre weiter.
Wir müssen raus hier ist voll die Klatsche. Nach dem eher zurückhaltenden Intro kommt diese flotte Indie-Nummer ziemlich unterwartet. Geil. Mein Highlight ist der Refrain, insbesondere die Melodie: Erstmal traurig und dann mitten drin der Wechsel zu einem glücklichen Moment. Ich habe irgendwie Lust los zu rennen und optional was kaputt zu machen. Kurzer und prägnanter Song, alles was gesagt werden wollte, wurde gesagt.
Zur Mitte der Platte wird es dann interessant: Vom Titel her hatte ich etwas anderes erwartet, na und? Kurze Psychoanalyse meinerseits: Der Sänger Tristan scheint wohl ein Mac-Nutzer zu sein (Geek-Fact: Windows benutzt Steuerung+Z, um eine Aktion rückgängig zu machen, nicht Kommando). Nach der Erleuchtung fand ich den Track dann ziemlich fetzig, vor allem die Idee an sich: So ein Kommando Z bräuchte eigentlich jeder Mensch im Leben oder nicht? Einfach mal alle Aktionen rückgängig machen bis zu der Stelle, an der man verkackt hat. Was wohl Alt-J davon hält? 😉
Der Song ist in der Strophe Endzeit-Postrock-mäßig, melancholisch. Der Refrain kontrastiert auch hier schön: Alle Instrumente bis auf die Gitarre werden rausgenommen. Der Fokus liegt nur auf dem Gesang und dem Gesungenen. Über die vollen 5:12 steigert sich der Song absolut in seine selbst kreierte Stimmung rein. Geiler Ansatz, mit kleinem Minus: Gegen Ende klingt der Song ein bisschen wie ein x-beliebiger Rock-Pop Song, den man von einem Mainstream-Radiosender zum Feierabend-Stau serviert bekommt. An der Stelle vielleicht etwas zu dick aufgetragen 😉
Wieso nicht könnte der Soundtrack meines Lebens sein. Besser: Er sollte der Soundtrack des Lebens eines jeden Menschen sein. Bis zum Einsatz der Drums klingt der Song wie eine aufgehende Sonne am Morgen. Er beschreibt perfekt dieses Gefühl, was ich selber oft viel zu oft habe: Nämlich irgendwie nicht so richtig zu leben. Alles ist oft so betäubt und farblos und zieht an einem vorbei. Die Lethargie des Alltags, die metaphorisch mit Benzin übergossen wird – Das Bild gefällt mir irgendwie. Sehr schön finde ich das Ende: Wieso nicht heute mal was anders machen, als die Tage davor? Eigentlich mein persönliches Highlight der Platte – Es kommt mir so vor, als würde Tristan mir die Frage persönlich stellen: Hier Junge, warum denn eigentlich nicht? Bleibt auf alle Fälle im Bewusstsein.
Wieso nicht könnte der Soundtrack meines Lebens sein
Zum Schluss wird noch einmal der unterschwellige Vibe, der die ganze EP zu fühlen ist, klar definiert: Wenn du singst holt mich mental wieder auf den kalt-nassen deutschen Bürgersteig zurück, auf dem ich abends alleine nach Hause gehe. Vergessene Träume, älter werden, sich vergangene Momente und Menschen zurück wünschen. Zusammengefasst: Ein Gefühl der Vergänglichkeit breitet sich beim hören in meiner Brust aus.
Ich musste bei dem Song sofort an Freiheit ist ’ne Hure von Milliarden denken, auch eine Berliner Band. Sowohl die Gitarre als auch die Melodie klingen sehr ähnlich. Zufall oder gewollt? ‚Ne kantige Liebesballade eben, was willste mehr? denke ich mir. Kompliment an die Solo-Gitarre: Das Solo könnte von John Mayer eingespielt sein. Ich werde zurückgelassen in einer Blase aus Zufriedenheit und Unzufriedenheit zugleich. Geht das überhaupt? Witzig, dass es gerade jetzt zu regnen anfängt.
Alles in allem ist Tombola von TOMBOLA eine schöne, deutsche Indie-Rock EP, die zeigt, in welche Richtung die Band gehen möchte. Flotter, textlich gut durchdachter Indie der mal melancholisch, mal verrückt, aber immer nach vorne gerichtet ist. Einfach Musik, bei der man sich jung und wild fühlen kann. Die eingestreuten Prisen von Pop und Punk sind gut dosiert und machen die EP spannend zu hören.
Natürlich gibt es an der einen oder anderen Stelle noch etwas auszubessern, aber sich als Band zu finden ist ja ein beständiger Prozess. Ich bin auf jeden Fall sehr gespannt, in welche Richtung sich TOMBOLA noch entwickeln werden.
