Am 18. Januar ist Dahlia Sleeps neue EP Love, Lost erschienen. Mega Teil, wie ich finde. Meiner Meinung nach eine sehr atmosphärische und in sich stimmige Sammlung von Songs, mit der Dahlia Sleeps auf jeden Fall das Interesse einer größeren Öffentlichkeit geweckt haben.
Ich hatte nach dem Hören der EP ein paar Fragen an die Band, die mir auch prompt von Lucy Hill, der Fronsängerin von Dahlia Sleeps, stellvertretend beantwortet wurden. So wurde zum Beispiel unter anderem die Frage, nach dem Namen der Band beantwortet. Doch ließ am besten selbst! 🙂
P.S.:Das Interview wurde von mir ins Deutsche übersetzt, viel Spaß beim lesen!
Tim: Wie sieht euer Songwriting-Prozess aus? Sind erst die Texte da und dann die Musik, oder ist es eher anders herum?
Lucy: Jeder Song hat eine ganz eigene Entstehungsgeschichte. Manche Songs entstehen, wenn Luke ein Instrumental geschrieben hat, andere wiederum beginnen bei mir zu Hause in der Wohnung am Klavier. Luke und ich treffen uns dann und zeigen uns gegenseitig unsere Ideen und die, die uns beiden am besten gefallen werden dann ausgewählt und wir holen uns Spencer für die Gitarre und Callum für die Drums mit dazu.
Tim: Woher kommt eigentlich der Name Dahlia Sleeps?
Lucy: Gute Frage *lacht*. Luke gibt unseren Demo-Songs immer so komische aber liebevolle Arbeitstitel und einer dieser Songs hieß eben Dahlia. Als wir uns dann einen Bandnamen überlegen mussten, hatte ich den Namen irgendwie noch im Hinterkopf und schlug ihn vor. Nachdem wir dann unsere erste Single unter dem Namen Dahlia veröffentlicht hatten, mussten wir leider feststellen, dass der Name schon vergeben war. Also mussten wir irgendwie improvisieren und sind dann bei Dahlia Sleeps gelandet.
Tim: Sind manche Figuren aus den Songs realen Personen nachempfunden?
Lucy: Ja natürlich! Jeder Song hat ein bestimmtes Thema. Manche sogar mehrere. Love, Lost erzählt sehr viele Geschichten aus unserem Leben oder den Leben von Personen die uns nahe stehen. Wir wollten dabei sehr ehrlich sein, was immer eine gewissen Verletzlichkeit mit sich bringt. Um auf die Frage zurückzukommen: Ja, jede Figur aus einem Song hat eine reale Vorlage.
Tim: Welche Bands beeinflussen euch und eure Musik?
Lucy: Jeder von uns hat einen anderen Musikgeschmack, was für eine große Diversität sorgt! Luke und ich schicken uns oft Playlisten und tauschen uns so aus. John Hopkins, MOVEMENT, Four Tet, Radiohead. Das sind so unsere gemeinsamen Nenner. Ich persönlich mag noch Florence + The Machine, Middle Kids und Jorja, Smith. Aber egal welche Musik wir auch hören, Emotionen sind immer ein grundlegender Teil der Songs.
Tim: Eure Themen sind ja eher philosophischer Natur und etwas „schwerer“ als klassische Themen der Popmusik. Würdest du sagen, dass diese Themenwahl auch eure persönlichen Charakter gut darstellt?
Lucy: Ich würde sagen, dass wir alle sehr nachdenkliche Menschen sind. Ich glaube, wenn du Musik schreibst, dann bist du von Natur aus jemand, der viel über Dinge nachdenkt. Niemand von uns hat Angst, seine Emotionen in Form von Musik zu zeigen. Egal ob dem Publikum oder untereinander als Bandkollegen. Unser Ziel ist es einfach nur, bei allem was wir als Dahlia Sleeps tun, Menschen in ihrem Kern zu berühren und Emotionen zu wecken.
Tim: Ich finde das beschreibt eure Musik ziemlich gut. Ich kann da auf jeden Fall nur zustimmen. Jetzt wo eure EP Love, Lost erschienen ist, werdet ihr bestimmt bald auf Tour gehen, oder? Kommt ihr auch nach Deutschland?
Lucy: Ja wir möchten sehr gerne auf Tour gehen und Deutschland wäre dabei auf jeden Fall unser erster Stop! Mehr verrate ich an der Stelle noch nicht 😉
