Gatlin zeigt mit ihrer ersten Single Maniac, dass sie poppig genug ist, um die Massen zu begeistern, dabei aber ihre Authentizität beibehält.

Über Gatlin gibt es nicht so viele Informationen. Man weiß, dass sie aus Nashville kommt, und Musik macht, die so klingt, wie ihre Ur-Oma gelebt hat. Klingt witzig? Vielleicht. Man sollte wissen, dass Gatlins Ur-Oma eine wahre Heldin ihrer Zeit war, die alle Konventionen gebrochen hat.

Maniac hat einen ziemlichen spannenden Klang. Während die Musik eher glücklich-verträumt ist, scheinen die Texte dagegen eher traurig und melancholisch zu sein. Wahrer Dream Pop, den Gatlin hier gezaubert hat. Besonders gut gefällt mir ihre sanfte und zugängliche Stimme, die Emotionen und Gefühle überträgt. Das gibt mir ein Gefühl von Authentizität. Die Dinge von denen sie erzählt, sind ihr so oder so ähnlich wirklich passiert. Das ist zumindest mein Gefühl beim hören. Das schafft eine Art Bindung zwischen Gatlin und mir, dem Hörer.

Obwohl der Song auf der einen Seite also echt poppig und „einfach“ ist, hat er beim genaueren hinhören doch eine gewisse Komplexität und Tiefe, die sich erst beim zweiten oder dritten Durchgang voll entfaltet.
