Chillige Elektrosounds gepaart mit flowenden Rap? Das findet ihr auf dem neuen Album von A-Reece.
Der aus Gauteng, Südafrika stammende Rapper schreibt schon Songs, seit er auf die Schule kam. Zu Hause hat er eine stabile Fanbase, die ihn auch bis zur Nominierung für MTV Africa Music Awards in der Kategorie „Best Fanbase“ gebracht hat. A-Reece hat jetzt sein nächstes Album mit dem Titel „Today’s Tragedy, Tomorrow’s Memory: the mixtape“ gedropped.
Mal eben so nebenbei erzählt er uns von seinem Leben und seinen Problemen, und je mehr man zuhört, desto mehr wird einem klar, dass da gar nichts „mal so eben nebenbei“ läuft. Ob es nun um Scheidung, Sorgerecht oder finanzielle Probleme geht – schwierige Themen im tighten Flow. Kein Wunder, dass A-Reece „Lyricist of the Year“ in Südafrika gewonnen hat. Allerdings ist auch A-Reece anscheinend der Ansicht, dass zu Hiphop immer auch Seximus gehört. In „Morning Peace“ sagt er, dass er früh morgens keine Lust auf Drama hat. Kann man gut nachvollziehen. Stattdessen fordert er eine erotische Handlung – zumindest lässt der Text es vermuten. Spätestens als A-Reece anfängt, auch noch die Gaslighting-Keule zu schwingen („Don’t you be scared. (…) It’s all in your head.“), ist es für mich zu viel, und ich skippe den Song.

A-Reece in „Morning Peace“
Die Musik ist geprägt von gesampleten elektronischen Sounds und hintergründiger Drummachine. Ich erwische mich beim Im-Takt-Nicken in der U-Bahn. Der Fokus liegt auf der Stimme, und die ist mal ganz nah an einem dran, mal ist sie wie weit entfernt, mal melodisch, mal monoton.
Auf dem Album hat A-Reece auch mit anderen Künstlern wie Wordz, Jay Jody, BeloSalo, Stogie T und Ayanda Jiya zusammengearbeitet. Kennst du nicht? Ging mir auch so, aber es wird echt mal Zeit, da reinzuhören.
Ganz ehrlich, ich hab’s noch nie so sehr mit Rap oder Hiphop gehabt – aber der Sound und Flow von A-Reece (abgeleitet von Aries, Widder, seinem Sternzeichen) gefällt mir sehr gut. Anscheinend sind sexistische Texte auch 2021 immer noch angesagt – aber der Künstler hat glaube ich noch einen langen Weg vor sich, bei dem er an seinem Songwriting, seinem Sound, und hoffentlich seiner Meinung und seinen Texten über FLINTAS arbeiten wird.
A-Reece new album: hip hop from South Africa

The artists is from Gauteng in South Africa and writes songs since his first year in school. At home he has a pretty good fanbase, he even got nominated for MTV Africa Music Awards for „Best Fanbase“. Now A-Reeze dropped his new album: „Today’s Tragedy, Tomorrow’s Memory: the mixtape“.
He tells us about his life and his problems, but the more careful you listen, the more you realize that A-Reece chose the title „Today’s Tragedy“ with a purpose. There are many different problems discussed in the lyrics with ease. No wonder why A-Reece won „Lyricist of the Year“ of South Africa. But the artist seems to believe that Hiphop doesn’t work without some sexism. In „Morning Peace“ he describes how he doesn’t want any drama in the morning (which is quite reasonable). Instead he wants some sexual action, at least the words seem to mean something like that. Later on, when A-Reece starts to gaslight („Don’t be scared. (…) It’s all in you’re head.“), I can’t stand it anymore and I skip the song.

A-Reece in „Morning Peace“
The sound is formed by samples and a background drum machine. Without knowing I start to nod my head with the beat in the underground. The most important thing is the voice – sometimes close, sometimes far away, sometimes singing, sometimes talking.
For this album A-Reece worked together with a few other artists: Wordz, Jay Jody, BeloSalo, Stogie T and Ayanda Jiya. You don’t know them? Neither did I, but now I do, and you should definitely give them a try.
To be honest, I have never been a true fan of hiphop. But I really like the sound and the flow of A-Reece (the name comes from Aries, his zodiac sign). Obviously it’s still „cool“ to be sexist in your lyrics in 2021. But I really hope this artist has a long road ahead and will have the opportunity to work at his sound, his songwriting, and hopefully his opinion and lyrics about FLINTAS.
