NOVA macht Afro-Fusion-Mucke und hat für mich einen ganz neuen Vibe eröffnet, den ich gerne mit euch teilen würde. Der in Toronto lebende Künstler hat mit mir über seine musikalische Vergangenheit, sein kommendes Album S. T. A. Y. II und seine Single Precious Diamonds feat. Katasha J. in einem Online-Interview gesprochen.
Okay, fangen wir ganz am Anfang an. Wer bist du und was machst du für Musik?
Also, man nennt mich Nova. Den Namen hab ich schon seit der Highschool. Ich hab mit Freunden rumgehangen und wir haben ein bisschen Musik gemacht, free style rap und so, und dann wurde ich Nova Kills genannt. Ich hab dann auch ein bisschen was aufgenommen und an meinem Sound geschraubt, eher weg vom Rap und mehr hin zur Melodie.
Mein erstes Projekt hieß „Who is Nova Kills?“, das kam raus als ich siebzehn war. Das nächste Projekt his „Welcome to my city“ und dann kam das erste „S.T.A.Y.“-Album. S.T.A.Y. steht für Still Think About You (denke immer noch an dich). Das habe ich 2018 herausgebracht, als ich von Nigeria nach Toronto gezogen bin. Das ist das Album, bei dem ich über diese große Veränderung in meinem Leben geschrieben habe. Von +29 Grad in -29 Grad umzuziehen ist schon heftig. I wollte keine Features, es ging mir eher darum, dass die Leute mich kennenlernen, und ich wollte ein zusammenhängendes Werk schaffen. Jetzt in 2020, was so ein komisches Jahr war, hab ich mein erstes eigenen Homestudio und kann jetzt auch von zu Hause arbeiten, was super cool ist. Ich verbringe den ganzen Tag mit Musik oder in Zoom Calls mit anderen Musikern.
Mit wem hast du an deinem neuen Album S. T. A. Y. II gearbeitet?
Ich habe mit Bankyondbeatz gearbeitet, er ist der Executive Producer von S. T. A. Y. II und lebt in Nigeria. Mit ihm arbeite ich schon seit etwa zehn Jahren zusammen. Ich hab auch mit Toye Are zusammengearbeitet, den Executive Producer von Precious Diamonds, und er hat auch ein paar Tracks für das Album produziert. Außerdem arbeite ich noch mit verschiedenen Produzenten aus Südafrika und England, hauptsächlich virtuell natürlich. Ich bin so froh, wie das Album schließlich geworden ist. Mir gefällt es, dass sich mein Sound und meine Stimme weiterentwickelt. Es ist mir auch sehr wichtig, dass ich mich in meiner Musik selbst ausdrücken kann, und ich glaube, genau das ist mir bei S. T. A. Y. II gelungen.
Ehrlich gesagt war deine Musik für mich was ganz neues für mich. Ich hab mir deine Alben angehört, und auch natürlich was von Katasha, deinem Feature bei Precious Diamonds. Wie habt ihr euch kennengelernt?
Mein Cousin hat uns vorgestellt. Sie ist eine der wenigen, mit der ich zusammengearbeitet habe, die ich tatsächlich getroffen habe. Seit wir uns das erste Mal gesehen haben haben wir eigentlich an Precious Diamonds gearbeitet, und ich glaube sie ist genau das Richtige für den Afro Fusion Sound, den ich haben wollte. Ihre R’n’B-Stimme vervollständigt den Song irgendwie. Ich bin so froh, dass ich mit so jemandem zusammenarbeiten konnte.
Hast du noch mehr Features geplant für S. T. A.Y. II?
Oh ja, einige. Zum Beispiel bringe ich am 25.02. die nächste Single, auch mit Feature.
Was inspiriert dich? Wer sind deine musikalischen Vorbilder?
Drake, auf jeden Fall. The Weeknd. Die Superball-Halftime-Show war der Wahnsinn. Sein Sound und seine Karriere sind super inspirierend für mich. Außerdem noch Whiz Kid und Burna Boy. Ich habe so viele Leute, die mich inspirieren, was auch daran liegt, dass ich ja in England geboren, in Nigeria aufgewachsen und jetzt nach Kanada gezogen bin. Früher wurde mir gesagt, dass meine Musik zu „international“ klingen würde. Inzwischen geht es mir mehr darum, mich selbst in meiner Musik auszudrücken, als „international“ zu sein.
Was möchtest du unseren Lesern noch sagen?
Ich habe hart an S. T. A. Y. II und Precious Diamonds gearbeitet, also hoffe ich, dass es viele Leute hören und dazu eigenen Erinnerungen schaffen. Folgt mir doch auf Instagram und Youtube, hört meine Musik, checkt mal das Musikvideo für Precious Diamonds. Lasst einfach meinen Song laufen!

NOVA and his music: The interview
With his Afro Fusion music NOVA opened a whole new world to me. I want to share my excitement with you, and spoke with the artist about his musical background, his upcoming album S. T. A. Y. II and his single Precious Diamond feat. Natasha J.
Let’s start at the very beginning: Who are you and what’s your music like?
Okay, so, I go by Nova. The name came from Highschool. I used to hang out with my friends and we came up with some song, did a little free style rap and stuff. When I was a teenager I used to go by Nova Kills. Then I started evolving my sound, moving away from rap more towards melody, and I really found my own sound in terms of being able to rap and also being able to sing. Then I had to use that to create the music I wanted to created. That is was the S.T.A.Y. Album is about, it’s my third project.
My first project is called „Who is Nova Kills?“. I dropped that when I was 17. The next project was „Welcome to my city“.
S.T.A.Y. stand for Still Think About You. I dropped that when I moved from Nigeria to Toronto, I moved here in 2018. And it was like: that’s the album, that’s me reflecting on that transition, making this back move from 29 degrees to -29 degrees. In this album I felt like I had more control over what my music should sound like and I was feeling comfortable in my own sound. I didn’t wanted any features, I wanted people to get to know my voice, I wanted to explore being able to create consistent work. Now moving to 2020 which was such a weird year for the whole world, I had so much free time and for the first time I got my own home studio. And I just started recording and started working on the next S.T.A.Y. album. I spent the whole day making music which was a really interesting experience. The process of working was a very virtual process, many zoom calls over collaborations and mixes and stuff.
Who did you work with for your new album S.T.A.Y. II?
So I worked with Bankyondbeatz, he is the executive producer of S.T.A.Y. II and he is based in Nigeria. I’ve been collaborating with him for over ten years now. I also worked with Toye Are, who is the executive producer of Precious Diamond, and he produced a few tracks on die album. He is based in the States. I worked with different producers from South Africa, England, mostly connecting virtually. I am so glad how it turned out. I like to hear evolution in my sound and my voice. It is very important for me to feel free on my music. And on this album I was able to find that sweet spot of finding that zone of freedom to express myself.
It’s like you opened a new world of music to me. I listened to your work and to Natashas, too. How did that happen, how did you guys meet?
My cousin brought us two together. And we were working on Precious Diamonds since we met. I felt like Katasha was the perfect person for that Afro Fusion type of music I wanted to make, and her R’n’B voice really completes the song. You know, my music has so many influences, you can’t really tell where its from. So I was happy to connect with someone new to have that synergy in that song.
Are there more features planned for S.T.A.Y. II?
Yes, there are. On 25th I drop another track which is called „Can’t Complain“ with an Nigerian artist, just to name an example. But there will be more.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Drake, definitely. The Weeknd. His superball performance was huge. His sound and his career is so inspiring. Whiz Kid, Burna Boy. There are so many inspirations for me because of my own background, being born in England, growing up in Nigeria, living in Canada right now. I feel like the older I got the less I was trying to sound internationally the better I became in expressing myself, originality over internationality. As long I am happy to express myself I can get inspiration from anywhere.
