Wer die bisherigen Titel der Parcels im Ohr hat (Overnight, Older, Gamesofluck), weiß vielleicht, zu was die Australier in der Lage sind – wenn sie denn wollen. Als Parcels also erschien und alle Instagram-Profile großer Künstler und Bands die Platte lobten wie Eltern ihr Erstgeborenes, dachte ich mir, dass dieses Album eine hochexplosive Mischung aus Disco, Funk und dem besonderes Etwas der Parcels sein muss. Meine Erwartungen waren also ziemlich hoch und ich habe mich voller Vorfreude auf dieses 12 Nummern schwere Album gestürzt. Nur um dann voll auf die Schnauze zu fliegen und richtig enttäuscht zu werden. Also, ziehen wir’s durch.
Die Eröffnung macht Comedown. Ich komme mir vor wie beim Einlauf einer Best-Of-80-Chartshow die von irgendeinem charakterlosen, geleckten Moderator im Privatfunk moderiert wird. Der Gesang ist okay, ansonsten passiert aber nichts interessantes in diesen 3:08. Das Schlagzeug ist mir ziemlich unsympathisch, die Snare klingt mit jedem Schlag schlimmer. Spiel halt mal ein Fill oder sowas, ich hab schließlich Geld bezahlt. Die Eröffnung ist ehrlich gesagt ziemlich schwach, da hätte ich mir deutlich mehr Druck gewünscht. Ich gucke wie ein Vorstadtkind, was kein iPhone zu Ostern bekommen hat.
Wow, okay, cool, den Übergang zu Lightenup habe ich nicht gehört. Respekt dafür, Jungs. Ich trage aber auch manchmal meine T-Shirts falsch herum und bemerke das nicht. Lightenup ist im Ansatz das, was man von den Parcels erwarten kann. Ich bin etwas zufriedener, aber so ganz schmeckt mir die Geschichte immer noch nicht. Zum Glück kommt ja als nächstes Withorwithout, also praktisch die Frage die jeden quält, der Döner mit Knoblauchsauce bestellen möchte, später aber noch ein Date hat. Wie die Songs davor, hörbar, aber uninteressant. Das Synthie-Solo rettet da auch nichts mehr und ich warte sehnlichst auf den nächsten Song.
Tape fängt sogar relativ vielversprechend an, wir überschreiten nämlich die Grenze der gefühlten 89 BPM. Doch die Aufregung ist nur von kurzer Dauer, es passiert nämlich SCHON WIEDER nichts Aufregendes. Der Track hebt nicht so richtig ab. Genau genommen hebt er überhaupt nicht ab. Die Drums gehen mir auch hier gegen den Strich. Dann kommt Everyroad und das finde ich eigentlich schon ein bisschen frech, nach vier eher schwachen Songs so eine acht Minuten Nummer zu bringen. Für wen halten die sich? Pink Floyd? Für mich klingt Everyroad eher wie ein Teller beim All-You-Can-Eat-Buffet. Von allem etwas, aber nichts so richtig. Und man ist auch nicht richtig satt, sondern so komisch satt. Weißt du was ich meine? Diesen komischen Dubstep-Part am Ende erwähne ich gar nicht erst.
Da ist er endlich, dieser Gitarrensound, auf den ich so lange gewartet habe
Yourfault ist tatsächlich ganz nett. Nichts neues, vor allem nichts funkiges, aber einfach ganz nett zu hören. Hätte auch von Mac DeMarco oder einer beliebigen Indie-Band sein können, die einem von einem edgy Youtube-Kanal vorgeschlagen wird. Eignet sich gut zum frühstücken am Sonntagmorgen oder nach der Arbeit abschalten. So schnell wie Yourfault angefangen hat, ist er auch wieder zu Ende. Closetowhy kann mich schon gar nicht mehr enttäuschen, weil ich nichts mehr erwarte von diesem Album. Der Bums fehlt einfach. Ist genau wie der Song davor, einfach ganz nett. Nichts, wo du sofort merkst, der ist es. Doch halt! Was ist das? In der Mitte höre ich endlich das raus, worauf ich mich gefreut habe! Parcelige Funkiness. Da ist sie endlich, diese Gitarre im Hintergrund. OMG. Ich habe Tränen in den Augen und mein Körper schüttelt unaufhörlich. Die ersten Leute schauen bereits rüber. Jemand ruft einen Krankenwagen.
IknowhowIfeel (Was soll überhaupt die Scheiße mit den Leerzeichen? Beziehungsweise eher ohne die Leerzeichen?) holt mich finally ab. Mein Kopf nickt mit. Zwar nur leicht, aber immerhin wurde eine körperliche Reaktion getriggered. Die Gesangsmelodie ist sehr schön, und bleibt im Gedächtnis. Einer der ersten Kandidaten, die es in meine Daily Rotation schaffen würden. Die Percussions stimmen auch. Da sind sie also endlich, die Parcels. Der Krankenpfleger stürmt rein und legt mir eine Aludecke um die Schultern. Heißen Kakao (mit Schuss) gibt’s auch noch.
Exotica finde ich minimalistisch-tight. Besonders spannend ist dieser ruhigen Teil der ab 3:51 beginnt. Irgendwie mysteriös und jazzig. Bisher der hörbarste Teil des Albums. Leider viel zu kurz. Tieduprightnow war uns ja bereits bekannt. Meine Vermutung ist einfach, jemand ist beim mastern an dem Tempo-Regler hängen geblieben und bis zur Masterpressung ist es niemandem aufgefallen. Das Ding würde richtig grooven, wenn es nur einen großen Tacken schneller wäre. So klingt das eher wie eine Play-Along Version auf Youtube für Grundschulkinder. Schade. Bemyself ist ebenfalls irgendwie weder Fisch noch Fleisch, so wie veganes Essen. Der Song klingt wie eine kleine Pause vom sonst so aufregenden Album. Plot-Twist, der Rest des Albums ist überhaupt nicht aufregend, also brauchen wir auch keine Pause.
Auch nach dem zweiten Mal durchhören ist der Funke trotzdem nicht übergesprungen
Tja, das war dann auch schon das Debüt der Parcels. Die Credits können die sich dann auch schenken. Hab jetzt keine Lust mehr. Ich bin richtig enttäuscht. Versteht mich nicht falsch, die Parcels sind großartige Musiker, die ihr Fach vollkommen verstehen. Allerdings hatte ich einfach etwas komplett anderes erwartet. Ich hatte mich auf eine Discokugel gefreut, die sich in Extase dreht, bekommen habe ich eine softe Mischung aus QVC-Shopping-Musik, und Hörspielbegleitung. Ehrlich gesagt habe ich einige Songs auch nur aus Anstand zu Ende gehört. Einfach weil ich es diese Parcels so lieb habe.
Von der eher mauen Palette an Songs, hat mich keiner wirklich mitgenommen. Auch nach dem zweiten Mal durchhören und lesen anderer Kritiken unter anderem von Muzamagazin (Hey Nicole,wie geht’s?), ist der Funke trotzdem nicht übergesprungen. Tut mir sehr leid, für mich selbst und natürlich für die Parcels, weil die Jungs bis zum Systemcrash mit einem lauen Lüftchen als Debüt in den Plattenläden stehen werden. Das Album gibt es natürlich auf Spotify zu hören!
