Das At The B-Sites Festival findet dieses Jahr bereits zum zweiten Mal statt. Künstler wie Giant Rooks, Alice Phoebe Lou, Isolation Berlin und weitere Acts werden am 08.09.2018 in Köln auf der Bühne stehen und ein Konzert der besonderen Art spielen. Denn alle Zuhörer werden Kopfhörer tragen und die Musik ausschließlich darüber hören! Ein tolles Prinzip, welches bereits seit fünf Jahren für Silent-Concerts und Silent-Movies verwendet wird!
Um mehr über die Hintergründe zu erfahren, traf ich mich mit Jens, einem der Haupt-Organisatoren des At The B-Sites Festivals. Wir sprachen über die Entstehung der Konzert-Reihe, ihre besondere Preispolitik, über Reaktionen aus dem Publikum und natürlich über potenzielle weitere Anwendungsgebiete des Silent-Konzeptes. Viel Spaß beim Lesen:
Das Interview
T: Ihr seid ja eigentlich Musikliebhaber, keine knallharten Business-Veranstalter. Wie kommt es also, dass ihr auf einmal Konzerte organisiert? Also wie habt ihr euch damals gefunden und wie viele Leute seid ihr jetzt im At The B-Sites-Team?
J: Also die At The B-Sites Reihe ist aus der gemeinsamen Arbeit hier am Projekt Wohngemeinschaft entstanden: Wir sind alle schon seit vielen Jahren befreundet und haben die gleichen musikalischen Interessen, da war das einfach der nächste logische Schritt auch Konzerte für sich und andere zu organisieren. Im Kern sind wir jetzt fünf Leute und wir kümmern uns um Booking, die Venue und das Marketing. Ist halt praktisch, dass das Booking-Profil der Wohngemeinschaft uns allen entspricht, da gibt es keine Streits über die Acts.
T: Wie seid ihr auf diese tolle Idee mit den Kopfhörern gekommen?
J: Es gab tatsächlich einen speziellen Moment, wo ich sagen könnte: Da wurde das At The B-Sites ins Leben gerufen! Vor genau sechs Jahren, also am 03.09.2012 hatten wir hier in der WG einen Künstler zu Besuch, der hieß Josh Autumn. Ich weiß noch, dass es sau heiß war und die Leute einfach nicht reinkommen wollten als Josh anfing zu spielen. Die standen einfach draußen auf der Terrasse und wir haben sie einfach nicht ins Theater gekriegt. Also sind Josh und ich schlussndlich einfach raus zu den Leuten gegangen und haben uns zu ihnen gesetzt.
Das war aber super undankbar, wir sitzen nämlich an der Richard-Wagner-Straße in Köln und da fährt alle fünf Minuten die S-Bahn vorbei. Man konnte also immer drei Minuten lang was von der Musik hören, dann kam immer die Bahn und hat für 10 Sekunden so viel Lärm gemacht, dass man gar nichts mehr gehört hat. In dem Moment hab ich dann gedacht, wenn jetzt alle Kopfhörer tragen würden, dann wäre die Lautstärke drum herum eigentlich egal.
Das ist ja auch heute noch unser Claim: Stadtlärm aus, Musik an – hätte man damals den Stadtlärm einfach ausschalten und die Musik lauter drehen können, dann wäre das ja richtig cool gewesen. So eine nahe, persönliche Erfahrung mit einem Musiker zu haben, in so einem städtischen, urbanen Umfeld.
T: Ich musste bei Silent-Concerts sofort an Silent Partys denken, aber das ist ja was ganz anderes, richtig?
J: Ja genau, das ist natürlich was ganz anderes und auch wie man es am ehesten missverstehen kann. Silent-Discos finde ich persönlich total sinnfrei, weil meiner Meinung nach die Referenz fehlt. Klar irgendjemand legt irgendwo Musik auf, aber was uns an der Stelle unterscheidet, ist die Referenz, dass der Künstler wirklich ganz nah bei dir ist, dass er dir praktisch in die Ohren singt. Der Künstler singt direkt ins Mikro und du hast das Mikro praktisch direkt am Ohr. Da gibt’s keinen Wind, keine Umgebungsgeräusche und das ist sehr direkt, sehr persönlich. Ich finde, ohne diese Referenz, jemanden zu sehen, der das gerade mit einem gestaltet, macht den ganzen Spaß kaputt. Wenn ich tanze, will ich es lieber laut haben und den Bass im Bauch spüren.
T: Obwohl so Silent Partys von außen ja ganz witzig aussehen. Aber das Silent-Konzept für Konzerte zu benutzen ist ja wirklich smart!
J: Ja klar, es hat tatsächlich auch noch sehr viele andere Vorteile. Auch zusätzlich zu der Tatsache, dass du von deiner Umgebung nur genau so viel mitkriegst, wie du mitkriegen willst. Du hast ja dann einen eigenen Lautstärkeregler an deinen Kopfhörern und wenn du Umgebungsgeräusche haben willst, machst du halt die Musik leiser. Wenn du aber die volle Dröhnung willst, machst du halt einfach lauter. Wir probieren jetzt auch erstmals eine neue 3D-Sound-Technologie aus, die verarscht das Gehirn ein bisschen und gibt einem ein Surround-Sound-Gefühl. Du hast also das Gefühl, du stehst mitten auf der Bühne. Das kriegt man ja mit normalen Anlagen überhaupt nicht hin! Aber mehr verrate ich jetzt nicht.
T: Letztes Jahr hat ja zum Beispiel Bonaparte bei euch gespielt. Doch auch Isolation Berlin oder Giant Rooks sind ja mittlerweile schon bekannte Namen. Wie schafft ihr es, solche Bands für euch zu gewinnen?
J: Also, teilweise werden Künstler einfach von der Idee überzeugt. Letztes Jahr zum Beispiel war Bonaparte unser Headliner und die sind mittlerweile seit 10 Jahren auf Tour – die können spielen, worauf sie Bock haben. Dazu gehören dann beispielweise auch Sachen, die sie noch nicht gemacht haben. Wie unser Silent-Concert zum Beispiel. Oder auch Alice Phoebe Lou haben wir mit Sicherheit überzeugt, denn gerade ihre Art von Musik ist ja ein bisschen leiser und braucht viel mehr Aufmerksamkeit.
Auf großen Festivals hast du immer eine Geräuschkulisse um dich herum: Der Getränkewagen klappert, die Leute neben dir reden miteinander, weil sie die Bühne wechseln wollen, die Bässe von der Technostage sind noch zu hören – und genau das macht uns eben besonders: Das ist alles abgeschaltet, du könntest dich mit dem Kopfhörer theoretisch sogar an den Strand setzen und es würde trotzdem überall gleich klingen – eben so, als wärst du ganz nah am Künstler dran.
Generell fragen wir für unser Booking die Künstler an, die wir gut finden. Wir müssen nur auch gleichzeitig überlegen, wie man ein gutes Paket zusammenstellt. Fairerweise muss ich auch zugeben, dass es manchmal auch einfach nicht klappt, so ein Booking-Vorgang ist dann doch eine recht komplexe Angelegenheit. Letzten Endes ist man dann aber doch immer stolz, wenn man merkt, dass man ein Paket zusammenbekommen hat, was nach einer Art eigener Handschrift klingt und man weiß: Dass wird ein spannender Tag! Wie zum Beispiel am Samstag 😉
T: Ihr habt ja eine pay-what-you-can-policy, das heißt die Leute können selbst entscheiden, wie viel Geld sie für ein Ticket ausgeben. Das ist sehr mutig, aber jetzt die Frage: Funktioniert das denn so wie ihr es euch vorgestellt habt?Also zahlen die Leute auch mehr als den Minimalpreis von 15€?
J: Ja, sie funktioniert tatsächlich. Man muss aber auch dazu sagen, dass das Festival aus einer Reihe von Konzerten stammt. Die At The B-Sites-Konzerte gibt es mithilfe unseres Sponsors schon seit fünf Jahren umsonst und in der Zeit haben wir einfach eine riesige Community zusammengetragen, die sich dem Konzept und unserer Art sehr verbunden fühlt. Wir fanden es nach fünf Jahren entsprechend schwierig zu sagen, wir nehmen jetzt einen festen Preis und jeder muss den zahlen. Wir fanden es viel spannender zu sagen: Entscheidet ihr doch mal! Nicht unbedingt danach wie viel es euch theoretisch wert ist, sondern auch wie viel es euch und eurem persönlichen Geldbeutel wert ist.
Außerdem war auch ein bisschen Neugierde mit dabei, wo es die Leute denn einordnen würden. Ich meine, es gibt wahnsinnig viele kostenlose Konzerte und manche vergessen dann den Wert dieser Arbeit. Man gewinnt schnell den Eindruck, dass kostenlos irgendwie der Normalzustand sei. Deswegen wollten wir dann schauen, wo die Leute den Preis sehen und 15€ war das Minimum. Das ist ja wie einmal ins Kino gehen, also aus unserer Sicht vollkommen fair für sechs Bands.
Natürlich war es auch wichtig, Leute zu inkludieren, die wirklich weniger Geld haben! Damit meine ich nicht den Studenten, der abends bei uns fünf Gin Tonic trinkt, aber angeblich keine 15€ für ein Ticket hat. Nein, ich meine wirklich die Leute, die weniger Geld haben und sonst vielleicht gar nicht an solchen kulturellen Events Teil haben könnten.
T: Das ist wirklich ein schöner Ansatz, den auch viele andere große Veranstaltungen, wie zum Beispiel das c/o Pop auch verfolgen. (Ich berichtete) Doch woher kommt euer Vertrauen in die Besucher?
J: Wie gesagt, das Vertrauen ist über die Jahre gewachsen. Wir kennen mittlerweile ganz viele Leute, die regelmäßig zu unseren Events kommen – Wir veranstalten vier Konzerte und vier Filme im Jahr, da kommen so im Schnitt 600-700 Leute hin. Viele sind echt schon bekannte Gesichter, die begrüßt man dann auch gerne. Ich glaube, wir hatten von Anfang an einfach das Glück, dass sich Leute um die Events gesammelt habe, die nicht einfach nur Event-Fans sind – so nach dem Motto: Wir gehen jetzt mal dahin, weil wir das noch nie gemacht haben. Sondern wirklich Leute, die auch immer neugierig waren, was wir dieses Mal für Künstler gebucht haben. weil sie viele davon vorher noch nicht kannten.
Ich meine, das ist ja auch für uns ein wahnsinniges Privileg! Wir müssen nicht drauf achten, ob die Künstler Tickets verkaufen oder nicht. Wir können einfach sagen, die sind der Knaller, dass müssen mehr Leute hören! Denen geben wir dann in Köln einen ersten Anlaufpunkt. Und dann kommen auch wirklich die 600 Leute, einfach weil sie uns vertrauen.
T: Wie sind die Reaktionen auf eure Spezialität? Sowohl auf Besucher- als auch auf Künstlerseite? Was sagt die Stadt Köln dazu?
J: Also von der Künstlerseite her, kriegen wir fast ausschließlich die Rückmeldung, dass das etwas sehr Schönes ist und sich die meisten sehr wohl damit fühlen. Ganz selten gab es mal Künstler, die sich bei uns nicht so wohl gefühlt haben. Das ist ja auch vollkommen legitim. Wir haben nun mal ganz andere Herangehensweisen, man muss sich auch als Künstler drauf einstellen. Im Grunde ist es für die Acts ja wie eine Studiosituation, nur mit Livepublikum. Ein großer Teil der Künstler sieht das als sehr Besonderes an und die Rückmeldungen sind immer positiv, weil die meisten das in der Regel noch nie gemacht haben.
Vom Publikum kriegen wir eigentlich auch nur positive Rückmeldungen. Ich kann mich jetzt in fünf Jahren nicht an eine einzige negative Stimme erinnern. Das liegt vielleicht auch daran, dass es bei uns wirklich um die Sache geht! Wir machen kein Kopfhörerkonzert, weil das noch niemand gemacht hat, sondern weil es bei uns inhaltlich um die Musik gehen soll. Sachen nach vorne bringen, die man in der normalen Konzertsituation gar nicht nach vorne bringen kann. Dass es eigentlich in vielen Bereichen eher ein Plus für so ein Konzert ist als ein Minus, dass begreift glaube ich jeder der mindestens einmal da war.
T: Seht ihr euch als die Zukunft der Open Airs Festivals? Die Idee hat ja ein ziemlich großes Potenzial für alles was Lärm macht und draußen stattfindet.
J: Nee. Nicht ausschließlich. Ich finde durchaus, dass Open Airs mit großen Anlagen ihre Berechtigung haben. Nur, was wir anbieten können, ist ein ganz anderes Erlebnis. Ich glaube aber trotzdem, dass es da ein gewaltiges Potenzial gibt, vor allem aus politischer Sicht! Uns ist das schon bewusst. Wir können mit dem Konzept an Orte gehen, die für laute Konzerte völlig undenkbar sind. Wir könnten im Jugendpark in Köln kein Open Air veranstalten, zumindest nicht bis nach 22:00 Uhr, weil dann der erste auf der Matte steht und die Polizei ruft.
Ich meine, das funktioniert ja auch schon seit Jahren. Wir gehen in den Park und machen das einfach. Wir melden da nichts an bei der Stadt. Natürlich kommt das Ordnungsamt dann vorbei und schaut sich das an und fragt, ob es eine Genehmigung gibt. Wir sagen dann immer, dass wir ehrlich gesagt nicht wüssten, was für wir eine Genehmigung bräuchten. Man umgeht eben ganz viele Reglementierungen und zwar nicht auf die Ihr-könnt-mir-nichts-Nummer, sondern auf die sympathische Win-Win-Art. Ich denke, der Mehrwert kann tatsächlich für alle da sein.
T: Musstet ihr schon mal ein Konzert abbrechen?
J: Man bespricht sich ein bisschen und dann merken beide Seiten, dass eigentlich keiner was verliert. Es wird kein Anwohner gestört und wir hinterlassen die Plätze immer super ordentlich und aufgeräumt. Es gibt also keinen Punkt wo man sagen könnte, man muss im Sinne der Öffentlichkeit regulierend einschreiten. Wir machen da was Gutes für ganz viele Leute und es gibt keinen Verlierer dabei. Natürlich überlegen wir, ob man sich nicht noch weiter vor traut und sich mit der Stadt bespricht. Die jahrelange Erfahrung sicherlich ein Argument. Ich glaube schon, dass es für innerstädtische Konzepte einen Raum gibt, der noch nicht erschlossen ist.
T: Zum Abschluss, der Blick in die Zukunft: Wo soll die Reise hingehen? Wo wollt ihr in fünf Jahren stehen?
J: Also toll wäre es natürlich, die Festival-Idee weiter ausgebaut zu bekommen. Wir überlegen auch schon, dass Festival über zwei oder drei Tage zu veranstalten. Im Jugendpark wäre das auch ohne zusätzlichen Aufwand möglich. Wir sind nur jetzt noch im Aufbau und wollen momentan kein Risiko eingehen. Auf lange Sicht ist der Wunsch dahin zu kommen natürlich da. Zusätzlich schielen wir schon auch immer darauf, was sich in der Stadt noch für Möglichkeiten ergeben. Wir haben da zum Beispiel auch schon mit dem Kölner Schauspielhaus gesprochen, aber das ist alles noch total offen. Wir möchten Kultur an Orte bringen, die ungewöhnlich sind. Unsere Stärke ist eben, dass wir alle sehr musikbegeistert sind, deswegen fühlen wir uns auf Konzerten am wohlsten. Grundsätzlich funktioniert das aber natürlich bei ganz vielen Dingen.
